The Nikon 4004S is a good camera but has some strange features. The camera's control area (Decision Master System) atop the camera has two dials, one to control shutter speed and the other the aperture both of which can be set to full auto. Normally the aperture controls are set in the lenses from 0 to 22, but in the case of this camera any setting other than 22 (narrowest aperture) will not permit you to take any pictures. Instead the dial on top of the camera is used to accomplish the aperture settings desired. So pricey lenses with gobs of features will go wasted on this camera body.
The camera can be used in a manual mode where the shooter must focus and adjust the shutter / apertures manually. The camera may also be used in a fully automatic mode. This means the focus, shutter speed and aperture are controlled by the camera's DMS. The shooter may also opt for a combination of manual/auto focus with manual/auto shutter controller and manual/auto aperture control. So the camera allows you to take pictures in the traditional no bells and whistles mode where the quality and effects of the picture is solely dependent on the 'skills' of the shooter or the carefree point and shoot mode where basically no camera know is required for operation.
It main body takes 4 AA alkalines to operate and the 550FD takes 4 AAs as well. I've recently re-acquainted myself with this camera and have found it loads of fun! It is a bit heavy and slow (in part due to the shooter) but it is very capable. Here are some pictures I recently took on a day hike in New Hampshire
